In an internal election, the Republicans have nominated 59-year-old Jim Jordan as the new candidate for chairman of the US House of Representatives. Jordan is considered a confidant of former US President Donald Trump. He narrowly defeated the largely unknown Austin Scott from Georgia with 124 votes to 81.

Jordan had already lost to 58-year-old Steve Scalise, but he withdrew his candidacy a short time later. Jim Jordan is now entering the Republican race to succeed Kevin McCarthy, who was voted out.

The entire House of Representatives will decide whether Jordan actually takes over the presidency. Initially, only 152 MPs said they wanted to vote for Jordan. 55 voted against him, one person abstained. The Republicans only have a very narrow majority in the chamber, which is why a few dissenters are enough to block a candidacy again.
