Sudan: RSF open to talks on extension of truce

CAIRO, May 27 (Reuters) – Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary units, which have opposed the regular army in heavy fighting since mid-April, said on Saturday they were open to the possibility of extending a ceasefire agreement which is due to expire on Monday.

In a statement, the FSR “declare themselves fully prepared to continue discussions during the last two days of the truce under the auspices of the US-Saudi mediation to discuss the possibility of renewing the ceasefire agreement and humanitarian arrangements”.

The belligerents signed a seven-day truce agreement last Monday to allow the passage of humanitarian aid, but the ceasefire has brought only a very relative respite to the Sudanese population after weeks of clashes between troops loyal to General Abdel Fattah al Bourhan and the FSR of former militia leader Mohamed Hamdane Dagalo, better known by his nickname Hemedti.
