At the south portal, the traffic jam is only one kilometer long. The waiting time is around 15 minutes.
Already at noon the waiting time in front of the north portal was more than an hour. After that there were two breakdowns in the tunnel. A breakdown vehicle had to move out and the entrances in both directions were temporarily closed, according to the TCS traffic service. As a result, cars were backed up for up to 14 kilometers in front of the Gotthard north portal.
Since the beginning of July there have been regular traffic jams of more than ten kilometers in length on the weekends at the Gotthard. Traffic also backs up at the north portal of the Gotthard during weekdays.
