Acne, oily skin or dry spots – especially in summer, our skin sometimes doesn’t want it the way we do. We asked an expert about the ultimate summer skincare.

Our skin is individual. That’s why there isn’t ONE recipe that we can all get along with. Still, there are a few things we can all keep in mind so that we do the best for our complexion even in summer (and late summer). How exactly do we do that? We asked Nicolas Travis, founder of the skin care brands Allies of Skin and PSA Skin.

Dos in summer

SPF – anytime, anywhere

Yes, sun protection is a must. You all know that by now. What some do not consider, however: You should also use sun protection factor at home. “Sun protection factor should be worn daily, in rain and sunshine. The UV rays penetrate through the windows, so anyone who works from home can protect the skin from damage,” explains Nicolas Travis.

Vitamin C + hyaluronic acid

According to Travis, the ultimate care combination for the summer is a combination of a vitamin C serum and a hyaluronic acid serum – it’s like an all-in-one skincare. Usually the two ingredients are combined because they complement each other and care for, protect and repair the skin. “Hyaluronic acid is great for caring for the skin and creating a moisture barrier. It helps the skin to regenerate. Vitamin C can help alleviate some of the sun damage. But don’t forget your daily sun protection,” explains the expert .

Anti acne cleansing

The warmer it gets, the more we sweat. Especially under the mouth and nose protection. This is why some struggle with impurities. To prevent this from happening, you should definitely pay attention to the correct cleaning of the skin. “Proper cleansing is one of the best things you can do for your skin,” says Nicolas Travis. Cleansing should not only cleanse, but also care for and nourish the skin. Sun protection, make-up and the like leave residues that you cannot simply remove with water or a facial tissue.

Don’ts in summer

Acids

Anyone who uses chemical peelings with AHA and BHA acids should be particularly careful in summer. The same applies to retinol. These active ingredients make the skin very sensitive to sunlight. Therefore, you should rather use enzyme peels in the summer months. If you can’t – or don’t want to – advise Nicolas Travis: “Make sure you wear enough sun protection every day.”

Make-up with SPF

How much is actually sufficient? One thing is certain: a foundation with SPF 15 is definitely not. It is very important that you cover your whole face with sun protection factor. You don’t even need a blob for adequate protection. If you don’t use enough product, a sun protection factor of 30 or 50 may not be enough. “I recommend at least a sun protection factor of 30 or even better 50 for the best protection,” explains Travis. He also advises putting on lotion every two hours when in the sun.

In particular, foundation with a sun protection factor doesn’t really make sense, but rather an add-on to normal sun care. But bear in mind: In products with a sun protection factor, the skin often tends to form deposits. Therefore, you should ask yourself whether a foundation with SPF is really necessary.
