Summer solstice dream weather – a mountain fire night that Tyrol has rarely experienced

Not a cloud in the sky, mild temperatures even on the peaks – the midsummer bonfires shone more magically than ever on Saturday evening. Now everyone is hoping that there will be similarly perfect conditions for the Sacred Heart next weekend.

For decades, many Tyrolean “fire burners” have been on the mountains around the solstice or the Sacred Heart of Jesus. But such perfect conditions were the absolute exception, is the conclusion. “An unbelievably great night,” enthuses Gerhard Bader from the Bergfeuer Ehrwald association. When the mountains around the valley basin began to glow on Saturday evening, tens of thousands of people had gathered to “watch the fire”. Many sat in the fields with picnic baskets and looked up at the motifs. Among them a dove of peace – appropriate to the world situation. Many spectators slept on the Nordkette afterwards. Fantastic conditions also prevailed in Innsbruck, where the rush to the Nordkette was enormous. “Many of them then stayed overnight on the mountain,” says Siggi Ploner from Innsbruck’s Sonnwendring. The only drop of bitterness: the Nordkette cable cars had to say “stop” at some point when going up the mountain. Around 800 visitors were able to follow the fire spectacle directly on the mountain. Ploner praises the cooperation with the city, the Alpine Park, the Alpine School and the gymnastics and sports clubs. A fascinating and – as far as is known – accident-free night is also enjoyed at the other locations of the midsummer bonfires. the mountains will burn for the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Everyone is hoping for another magical night.
