Summicron SL 35 and 50 F2 ASPH, two new “accessible” lenses from Leica

To accompany its range of hybrids, Leica is gradually expanding its optical fleet with two new fixed focal lengths of 35 and 50 mm, essentials for any photographer that will go perfectly with the recent Leica SL2 and SL2-S. If there are already lenses with the same focal length in the catalog of the German optician, the latter are around 5000 €, and are therefore reserved for a clientele of professionals or wealthy amateurs. With these new Summicron, Leica wants to offer a more accessible alternative without compromising on quality.

Not surprisingly, the two objectives are achieved with the rigor and care specific to the German manufacturer. They have a black anodized aluminum and magnesium alloy shaft, obviously resistant to water splashes and dust. Likewise, the front lens is protected by an Aqua-Dura hydrophobic treatment.

It is on the side of the optical formula used that these Summicron 35 F2 ASPH and 50 F2 ASPH differ from the versions stamped “APO”.

Indeed, the Summicron 35 F2 ASPH is based on a formula with 11 lenses divided into nine groups, including three aspherical lenses, while its APO counterpart has 13 lenses divided into 11 groups and obviously benefits from the apochromatic treatment aimed at eliminating any aberration.

For the Summicron 50 F2 ASPH, there are nine lenses divided into eight groups (compared to 12 lenses in 10 groups for the APO model) and still three aspherical lenses.

In addition, this new optical formula devoid of apochromatic elements significantly reduces the weight, which drops from 750 grams to 400 grams for the 35 mm and from 740 grams to 402 grams for the 50 mm.

Already available, the new Leica lenses are displayed at a particularly affordable price for the brand. It will thus be necessary to count 2295 € to afford the Summicron 35 F2 ASPH and 1990 € for the Summicron 50 F2 ASPH.

In addition, for photographers wishing to discover the Leica universe, the brand offers these two lenses as a kit with the recent SL2 and SL2-S. In addition, Leica is offering a €1,000 discount from February 8 to April 30 for any purchase of a kit.
