Milder temperatures awaken the desire to travel. And the longing for T-shirt weather, jumping into the pool, relaxing in a lounge chair on the beach, feeling the sun on your skin and recharging your batteries after the long, dark winter months. Unfortunately, it is still too cold for swimming in continental Europe. We present the top beach destinations for the month of March, sorted by flight time from Germany.

1. Fuerteventura: Sunbathing off the coast of Morocco

As a Spanish island, it still belongs to Europe, but is much closer to Africa: it is around 100 kilometers from Fuerteventura to the coast of Morocco. The second largest and easternmost of the seven Canary Islands owes its desert-like, dry climate to this fact, which makes it a warm travel destination with bathing fun all year round. In March the sun shines seven hours a day with temperatures around 23 degrees. But these can also skyrocket, as they did seven years ago. At that time the thermometer showed around 30 degrees from the middle of the month.

The Atlantic shines around Fuerteventura in surreal turquoise tones, but with temperatures of 18 to 19 degrees it only offers refreshing moments. Almost 150 kilometers of wide and bright sandy beaches make the island the perfect destination for beach fans who like to have their own personal beach. Example: Sotavento Beach on the Jandia Peninsula, Cofete Beach or Playa Bajo Negro, which is considered one of the most beautiful on the island. Water sports enthusiasts such as windsurfers, wing surfers, kite surfers and wave riders will also find conditions here that are only found in a few places in Europe – from beginner waves to big waves to flat water areas and strong wind zones. The fact that a constant wind blows over the island is already evident from its name, which means something like strong wind.

2. Egypt: Summer temperatures and a paradise for water sports enthusiasts

In five hours in the warmth: Egypt is a popular bathing destination, but has much more to offer with desert, pyramids and Nile cruises. The subtropical desert climate gives the North African country wonderfully warm weather in autumn and spring. The Red Sea coast is peppered with seaside resorts: from El Queseir, Makadi Bay, Sharm el Sheikh, Lahami Bay or Marsa Alam to the well-known beach classic Hurghada.

They all score points in March with average daily temperatures of around 25 degrees, nine hours of sunshine and water temperatures of 22 degrees. The underwater world is also a reason to celebrate. Snorkelers can observe many colorful fish on the coral reefs off the coast. The best conditions for wind and kite surfers begin in March. This means that on an average of 20 days in recent years the wind blew at least four Beaufort.

3. United Arab Emirates: Insider tips Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah

Just an hour’s flight away there is plenty of sun, endless sandy beaches and many exciting attractions: In the United Arab Emirates (UAE) there are fantastic weather conditions for sun worshipers in March. 27 degrees, nine hours of sun and water temperatures around 23 degrees. The most beautiful public beaches include the white Saadiyat Beach in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, as well as the palm-fringed The Beach JBR in Dubai, the Jumeirah Beach and the party beach Barasati. The latter is the only public beach where alcohol is sold.

The two emirates of Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah are considered an insider tip for beach vacationers – also because of their significantly cheaper prices. Sharjah, which translates as “sunlit,” has two coasts. The kilometers of beach paradises with powdered sugar sand, palm trees and Caribbean sea lie between the Persian Gulf in the west and the Gulf of Oman in the east. Humans have helped with the most beautiful bays right in the city: Khor Al Mamzar, Khor Al Khan and Khor Khalid are artificially created sea bays. Anyone who wants to explore the third largest of the seven emirates will find palaces, a historic old town with narrow streets, more than 20 museums, camel races and an amusement park for tourists.

4. Florida: Summer feeling in the Sunshine State

A treat for all number fans: 230 days of sunshine a year, 1,300 kilometers of sandy coastline on the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. The Florida peninsula in the southeast of the USA proudly bears the name Sunshine State. The climate in the Sunshine State is divided into 2 zones. In the north it is warm and subtropical, in the south there is a tropical, humid Caribbean climate. Spring is the driest season. In March the temperatures during the day are around 28 degrees, the water is a pleasant 24 degrees.

Florida’s beaches are among the best in the world and attract with great names such as Daytona Beach, Clearwater Beach or Miami Beach. The latter is located on an island that is connected to the city of Miami via several bridges. Popular with stars and starlets. The southern part of South Beach is one of the top travel destinations in the USA with its white sand, turquoise sea, extravagant lifestyle, art deco district, Ocean Drive promenade and lively nightlife. There are also paradisiacal beaches at the southern tip – on the island of Key West. Just driving on the Oversea Highway is an experience: the road leads over bridges up to eleven kilometers long over the sea and islands, always along the border between the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. Flight time: from eleven hours.

5. Mauritius: Island pearl in the southern hemisphere

What’s the reward for sitting still on a plane for at least eleven hours? Holiday without jet lag (only three hours time difference), seven hours of sun a day at temperatures around 26 degrees and bathtub-warm sea at 27 degrees. As well as white dream beaches with palm trees and a spectacular landscape with three mountain ranges. This is the island of Mauritius. 64 kilometers long and 47 kilometers wide, located south of the Seychelles and off the east coast of Madagascar. Its tropical climate combined with the southeast trade winds, which always make the temperatures pleasant, give the island optimal travel weather almost all year round.

From December to April there is summer on the island, which is also called the rainy season. But that doesn’t mean it rains all the time. In March, rainfall can occur on an average of seven days. Beach vacationers can easily escape this due to the topography of the island: the west coast is on the wind-protected leeward side and therefore in the shadow of precipitation. Some of the best and most beautiful beaches such as Flic en Flac are also located here. This natural beach is the longest sandy beach on the island – eight kilometers. And another highlight: divers find perfect conditions in March.

6. Costa Rica: Two coasts, hundreds of dream beaches

Pura vida – peace, serenity, environmental protection, being happy: This is the motto of life in Costa Rica, the most famous travel destination in Central America. The enormous biodiversity of plants and animals in the different landscapes and ecosystems as well as hundreds of picture-perfect sandy beaches – both on the Caribbean coast and on the Pacific coast – make Costa Rica so popular with tourists.

The Caribbean coast in the east of the country is influenced by trade winds and weather conditions from the Atlantic as well as many tropical rain showers. However, it rarely rains in the months of January, February and March. During the day the thermometer shows between 25 and 30 degrees, at night the values never fall below 20 degrees. It is significantly drier and hotter on the Pacific coast. Around five degrees more than on the Caribbean side, with temperatures of almost 30 degrees in March. With nine hours of sunshine every day, there is hardly any rain during this time. One of the most beautiful and pristine beaches is Playa Santa Teresa on the Nicoya Peninsula, which also offers ideal conditions for windsurfers. Playa Naranjo on the Gulf of Papagayo is said to have the lightest sand color. Surfers find the best north swells on the Pacific Coast from November to April. There is ideal underwater visibility for divers and snorkelers from November to April. The only downside: The flight time from Germany is between 13 and 14 hours.
