Sun goes down – Lightyear stops production of its solar mobile

A car that generates its own solar power is a nice idea – but apparently too difficult to implement. Sono Motors is backing up with EU funding, while Lightyear is now giving up. At least for now.

The Dutch electric car newcomer Lightyear has stopped production of the solar sedan 0, which costs a good 300,000 euros. Officially, series production did not start until the end of 2022 at Valmet in Finland. Only 946 copies were planned. The company does not reveal how many vehicles have been produced so far and how it deals with customers who have ordered a Lightyear 0. In order to complete the Lightyear 0 project, an application has already been made in court to open payment suspension proceedings against Atlas Technologies, which is responsible for production BV provided. Atlas Technologies Holding BV and Lightyear Layer BV, on the other hand, are not the subject of these proceedings. With these parts of the company, the company wants to continue operating the Lightyear car brand and concentrate on the realization of the Lightyear 2 solar power unit, which was designed for the mass market. The start-up is sticking to the plan to bring this to the market by the end of 2025 for less than 40,000 euros. It remains to be seen whether the financial resources will be sufficient for this.
