In the documentary series “JANET” broadcast last weekend on the American channels A&E and Lifetime, Janet Jackson returned to the famous “Nipplegate”, during the show given at the halftime of the Super Bowl in February 2004.
An event that the singer had definitely stopped mentioning in the media for several years, after her numerous attempts to explain how the scandal had taken place, and an apology publicly presented. Both by her and Justin Timberlake, who had torn off part of the singer’s costume, revealing her breast at the end of their performance. A vision apparently unbearable for a part of puritan America, which will not stop attacking Janet Jackson thereafter.
The career of the singer, which seemed to reach its peak during this performance given in front of hundreds of millions of television viewers around the world during the Super Bowl, will experience a serious setback following this affair called the “Nipplegate”, finding itself boycotted by several media. Nearly 18 years later, Janet Jackson says that the proportions taken by this incident were largely disproportionate.
“This should never have happened. But everyone is looking for a culprit, and it has to stop. Justin and I are good friends, and always will be,” she explains in the documentary.
Janet Jackson also claims that she regrets having apologized after the fact, because this incident was not intentional, and that she should never have accepted to bear the guilt. Justin Timberlake recently apologized to him about his role in this whole thing, regretting “those times in my life when my actions contributed to the problem.”
