Super League: St. Gallen ends Zurich’s unbeaten run

For the first time since the 8th round, since a 1:3 in Basel, leader Zurich has to accept a defeat in the Super League. Coach André Breitenreiter’s team lost 3-0 at home to St. Gallen.

For once, Mirlind Kryeziu is not the invincible chief of defense.

(sda) While Zurich specializes in providing early goals, this time the eastern Swiss struck in the first half – with a header goal by Croatian central defender Matej Maglica after just seven minutes and a goal prepared by Isaac Schmidt by striker Julian von, who was committed during the winter break Moos, who had not been able to assert himself at his regular club Basel. It would have been possible to make it 3-0 before the break if Jérémy Guillemenot hadn’t missed a great chance. Christopher Lungoyi (goal scorer) and Fabian Schubert, who came on as substitutes, made it 3-0 shortly before the end of the game.

FC Zurich had to break an impressive series due to the defeat. In the previous 17 games, Zurich had lost just as little in the championship as in the last 15 home games. They had all won their last six games in the Letzigrund.

St. Gallen, which more than confirmed the increase revealed in the previous second half of the season, is obviously the team that is doing best with FCZ this season. St. Gallen played 3-3 at home in the autumn after leading three times and were close to winning a point in the Letzigrund too, despite the 3-1 defeat they suffered in the final phase. They dominated in the Letzigrund for long stretches, which only a few other opponents of Zurich have managed to do.

The game was pretty rough and jumbled for a long time. Fouls and discussions took turns. Referee Stefan Horisberger issued the first two warnings – against Jordi Quintilla and Blerim Dzemaili – in quick succession because of complaints.
