“Barbie” passed the “Super Mario Bros. Movie”. The colorful work by director Greta Gerwig is now the highest-grossing film of 2023.
This milestone has been in the air for weeks: The “Barbie” film has overtaken the previous leader of the year, the “Super Mario Bros. film” at the worldwide box office. The work by director Greta Gerwig, 40, starring superstar Margot Robbie, 33, is now the highest-grossing release of the year – with an incredible worldwide box office of 1.36 billion US dollars (equivalent to around 1.26 billion euros). This is reported by the US industry magazine “Variety”.
The “Barbie” figures in detail
“Barbie”, which was released in German cinemas on July 20 this year, grossed 600 million dollars (556 million euros) at the North American box office. A staggering $760 million (€704 million) was added to the rest of the world. The colorful work about the popular toy doll thus surpasses the animated film about Nintendo video game plumber Mario mentioned at the beginning. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” had a worldwide gross of $1.359 billion.
“Barbie” has previously broken these records
Right from the start, the “Barbie” film proved to be extremely successful financially. In its first weekend, the film grossed $162 million (€150 million) at the North American box office, making it the most successful cinema debut of the year. The blockbuster already cracked the billion mark at the beginning of August.
Just earlier this week, “Barbie” passed “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2” (2011), the conclusion of the “Harry Potter” film series, and became the most successful global release from the film studio Warner Bros. According to ” Variety,” the title currently ranks 14th on the “all-time list” of the highest-grossing films of all time in North America, and 15th among the highest-grossing films worldwide.
