Super station wagon – BMW M3 Touring: The first – and faster than all

What a wonderful feeling that must be for a true BMW fan who has wanted a station wagon version of the M3 for decades. Generation after generation they refused in Munich, while AMG picked up the brisk trunk clientele with the C-Class. Now it’s here, and only with switchable all-wheel drive and the top drive!

They skipped the version without the addition Competition in the name. If you want that and manual transmission instead of an eight-speed automatic, you have to order the M3 sedan or M4 coupe. The six-cylinder in touring does not do less than 510 hp, up to 650 Nm are available from 2750 tours. The BMW, which weighs 1865 kg according to DIN, rushes to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, and after 12.9 seconds it’s already at 200 km/h. That would be a nice pizza delivery van. Around 120 boxes fit in the trunk, even around 360 if you fold down the rear seat backs. Without a styrofoam box of course. But if you drive fast enough, the food might stay warm until delivery. Although – with the crowd … A bit like the Santa Claus paradox. But I’m getting off topic. It is 500 or 1510 liters. The rear window can be opened separately. In any case, the M3 Touring is fast, the fastest station wagon on the Nordschleife: it was only 7:35 minutes. He has thus beaten the previous record holder by more than ten seconds – the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4MATIC+ Estate. A respectable success. Optically, one can certainly apply thickly. At the front anyway, but we especially want to see the rear. And there is a fat diffuser with two twin tailpipes, each with a diameter of ten centimeters and flap-controlled sound allowed to trumpet. On the obligatory roof spoiler there is a small extra spoiler, a spoiler lip called Gurney, which is supposed to increase the downforce on the rear axle. The cheeks are particularly thick at the rear, and not for nothing: 20-inch wheels run there, optionally with cup tires. At the front, the rims are only 19 inches. The tire format is 275/35 ZR19 at the front and 285/30 ZR20 at the rear. The driver can set how much of it should go up in smoke. First by choosing between all-wheel and rear-wheel drive. Then with the optional ten-stage traction control. He can also adjust the chassis, which is adaptive as standard. And if you are really serious, you can also order the carbon sports bucket seats. In any case, you will find what all newly launched BMWs now have in the interior: an attached curved display. Specifically, the BMW i4 says hello. The operating system is the current version 8, the iDrive controller is retained. Not like the 2 Series Active Tourer and the X1 where they left it out. We’re obviously keen to ride that, though we don’t expect any big surprises. How much you feel the weight will be interesting. The all-wheel drive M4 Competition, which I drove last, weighs 140 kg less. When it comes to the price, they make it even more exciting in Austria, in Germany 97,800 euros are given, which means a 1000 mark-up on the sedan. That means that in Austria we can expect a good 116,000 euros. Launch in November.
