Released in theaters in July 2006, Superman Returns, directed by Bryan Singer, did not achieve the expected success. With a budget estimated at 270 million dollars, it only brought in 391 million greenbacks internationally. In France, it attracted 1.5 million curious people.
After this failure, we had to wait 7 long years before seeing the Last Son of Krypton in the cinema. With Man of Steel, Henry Cavill made an impression as Superman and brought in $670 million at the worldwide box office for a budget of $225 million. Unfortunately, the sequel will be less glorious for this version of the Man of Steel.
THE END OF THE DCU?
The latter will return in Batman V Superman and Justice League but these films will be heavily criticized despite a certain commercial success. The first will bring in 874 million greenbacks worldwide and the second 661 million. However, this will not be enough to offset gargantuan production and marketing costs.
Henry Cavill will attempt a comeback in 2022 in Black Adam, appearing as Superman in a post-credits scene. The film with Dwayne Johnson will unfortunately be a resounding flop, just like Shazam 2. And the director intends to avoid the current flaws of superhero films. “We’ve gotten to this point where it’s like, ‘He’s a superhero, let’s make a movie about it!’ Then ‘Let’s make a sequel since the first one worked pretty well'”lamented James Gunn in the Inside of You podcast.
“But they never say to themselves, ‘Why is this story special? What makes it different from the others? What is its heart? Why is the character important? What makes the story quite different? to make people want to go see it in the cinema?”questions the filmmaker.
I like seeing different stories, instead of seeing the same story told over and over again.
“People have gotten lazy, there’s a lot of ‘Bam, bam, boom’ in these movies and I watch third acts of superhero movies without feeling like there’s a reason for these things to happen …I don’t care about the characters. They’ve become too generic. I like very serious superhero films, and very comedic ones as well.”
James Gunn also likes works where it’s about solving a murder, but with superheroes. “I like seeing different stories, instead of seeing the same story told over and over again.” In what register will Superman: Legacy be located, which he announced was more optimistic than Man of Steel?
