Supermarket test: this is the cheapest place to shop

From Lidl to Aldi to Rewe: there are many supermarkets and discounters. But where do you really buy the cheapest? That was the result of a supermarket test.

To be honest: when it comes to shopping, we are often quite stuck. We have been going to the same supermarket around the corner for years. We know him inside out – and hardly question this decision. After all, at some point we decided that we were dealing with the best market. But is it also the cheapest?

In advertising, discounters are now involved in a real price race alongside supermarkets. But are Lidl and Aldi really less expensive than Rewe and Edeka, for example? To find out, "inFranken.de" has now done the big supermarket test.

The portal went shopping in five different supermarkets and discounters. At Rewe, Edeka, Kaufland, Lidl and Aldi, exactly the same branded products ended up in shopping carts, including Haribo, Nutella, Maggi and Nivea. Special offers and pack sizes were also taken into account, for example.

The cheapest supermarkets and discounters

The result might come as a surprise to some: Kaufland won the prize. Here the purchase of the 12 products cost only 17.33 euros (as of July 3rd, 2020). At the discounter Aldi, which took last place, the testers, on the other hand, spent almost two euros more. This is the entire ranking:

  1. Kaufland (17.33 euros)
  2. Edeka (18.61 euros)
  3. Lidl (18.84 euros)
  4. Rewe (19.17 euros)
  5. Aldi (19.34 euros)

In the case of branded products, there are not even any major price differences between discounter and supermarket.

What you always have to keep in mind: the prices can of course vary quite a bit. InFranken.de had already carried out such a test in 2019 and has now repeated it in view of the VAT reduction – there have already been some changes in the ranking. Last year, for example, Lidl was still ahead.

What do we learn from it? Getting a breath of fresh supermarket air from time to time and comparing prices can be really worthwhile.
