ISW: Russia and Iran are planning a major military agreement

The ties between Moscow and Tehran are becoming ever closer. Relations are expected to intensify further, particularly in the area of military cooperation. This will also be recorded in contracts in the future, according to the experts from the Institute for the Study of War.
Russia and Iran are preparing to sign an intergovernmental agreement to further expand military-technological cooperation, report experts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). According to the ISW Moscow and Tehran want to strengthen bilateral military and technical cooperation by signing a major intergovernmental treaty as Russia continues to seek weapons and supplies to support its ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
In telephone conversations on Monday, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Reza Ashtiani, reiterated their plan to advance the “basic principles of Russian-Iranian relations.”
The renewed talks on an intergovernmental treaty come as Russia reportedly plans to buy short-range ballistic missiles from Iran. Although U.S. officials say a deal has not yet been finalized, they warn that Russia could receive Iranian missiles in the spring of 2024.
The ties between Moscow and Tehran are becoming ever closer. On the one hand, Iran remains an important arms supplier for Russia’s attack in Ukraine. Russia has already used thousands of Iranian Shahed Kamikaze drones in airstrikes against Ukraine. In addition, agreements have already been reached with Iran to purchase modern Russian aircraft and helicopters. On the other hand, Moscow and Tehran signed a declaration in December 2023 to jointly combat Western sanctions imposed on the two regimes for their role in the war against Ukraine.
