SurfShark fights against fake news

As the war in Ukraine continues to rage, an avalanche of bots and fake news around the conflict are invading the internet and social networks. Disinformation linked to the war of opinion and propaganda launched by Russia as the West showed its unity to its neighbor. False information that is not always easy to flush out on a daily basis, even outside of current attacks, although social platforms try to thwart fake news with their means.

At 21and century, information can be sharper than a sword “explains Vytautas Kaziukonis, CEO of Surfshark. Based on this observation, the company behind the eponymous VPN has just launched a new free tool to fight misinformation: an anti-fake news extension available on Chrome and Firefox. Its purpose: to highlight the links of websites and media known to spread fake news, knowingly erroneous information or even propaganda to sow discord, confusion or manipulate public opinion.

A completely free extension

At present, the FNW function (Fake News Warning) simply detects the URLs of the sites in question and highlights them with the red “YYY” symbol. The list of sites deemed unreliable comes only from propornot.com and Surfshark assures that it has been verified by its experts. However, this is only the beginning, since the company already claims to be working with new institutions specializing in security to enhance and continually improve this list.
