Lagging behind the rest of Valve’s products and a little neglected recently, SteamVR will finally catch up. Discussed since 2019, a version 2.0 rich in improvements is now available in beta!

Functional, but sparse. This is how SteamVR, the virtual reality version of Steam, could so far be described. But Valve has decided to finally correct this by deploying (in beta initially) a 2.0 version of its interface for users of VR headsets. Besides, wouldn’t this update be a clue linked to the upcoming release of a headset from Valve?

SteamVR integrates Steam features, among others

Before taking stock of the rumors surrounding this headset, let’s list what this 2.0 update contains. First of all, the dashboard interface benefits, like Steam recently, from a serious lick of paint and accommodates most of Steam’s central functionalities. For example, chat and voice chat are now included. The keyboard is actually improving to support themes, emojis and more languages.

For its part, the store now better highlights recent and popular VR games. Finally, compatibility on Linux is now better, and it is possible to interact with floating windows even when the dashboard is hidden.

Valve promises that this is just the beginning for SteamVR version 2.0. However, the release to the general public should not take place for several weeks, or even months, depending on feedback from testers. To become one, you will have to adopt both the beta version of SteamVR, but also the Steam client. Instructions can be found by going here and clicking there.

An update to accompany a new headset?

Since the release of its Index in 2020, Valve has reportedly been working (in particular) on a new standalone headset, codenamed Deckard. The firm has also been working for several years on other VR games to follow up on the acclaimed Half-Life: Alyx.

A combined release of all of this, accompanied by the finished version of SteamVR 2.0 within a few months, is therefore anything but unthinkable.
