Survey at the time after Corona: Germans are afraid of flying

Germans are afraid of flying

The end of the Corona travel bans is in sight, but the Germans do not really trust their possibly recurring freedom above the clouds: Even after the end of the pandemic, many do not want to storm the planes anytime soon, but prefer to stay on the ground.

Most Germans do not plan to travel by plane at short notice even after the corona crisis has subsided. This is the result of representative survey data from the market research company Dynata. At the beginning of February, the participants were asked about their travel plans if the federal government would give the all-clear with regard to the corona situation. 13.4 percent of those surveyed said that even after this signal to return to normal, they would still allow seven to twelve months to take a flight. 21.0 percent said they would even let more than a year pass. 22 percent plan not to climb a machine.

The Germans are also cautious when it comes to the last-minute segment. Accordingly, only 3.3 percent of those questioned plan to pack their bags very quickly and start a flight within a week after the Corona all-clear. Another 2.5 percent want to take one to two weeks and 6.9 percent of those surveyed three to four weeks. 15.1 percent of Germans want one to three months to pass and another 15.8 percent want four to six months.

The time window could open in summer. The Federal Government's Tourism Commissioner, Thomas Bareiß, assumes more freedom of travel in a few months: With vaccinations and rapid tests, travel could gradually become possible again. The CDU politician had predicted that most German vacationers will travel in their own country this year. "Most of them will stay in Germany," Bareiß told the business magazine "Business Insider" at the weekend. However, trips abroad would gradually be possible again – even if the long long-haul trip was not possible due to uncertain infection data and delay in vaccination.

Classic package tours could be included

"The classic package tour in Greece, Turkey, Mallorca, that will be safe with appropriate hygiene and infection protection precautions. The same may also apply to long-haul trips such as to the USA," Bareiß told the magazine. In regions with very different infection levels such as Egypt, individual regions could be released for vacationers and then served by airlines selectively.

In Great Britain, too, according to Dynata data, more than half of the citizens do not plan to fly within six months after the government would declare a return to normal. These include those who don't like to fly anyway. The crisis-ridden travel group TUI is counting on the vaccination campaigns being successful not only in Great Britain but also in Europe by the summer. That is why TUI is planning to continue with 80 percent of its pre-crisis capacity in the seasonally strong months of July to September.
