Your children’s school must be guarded by the police

Susan Sideropoulos embarks on a journey through Jewish history in Germany in the documentary “Shalom & Hallo”. The actress herself is a devout Jew. But they are still worried today – starting with their children going to school.
“I wish that the police would no longer have to stand in front of my children’s school. But unfortunately these are facts to which we are at the mercy,” reveals Susan Sideropoulos, 41, in an interview with “Bild am Sonntag”. The very thought of whether she has to worry about her children openly walking on the street with a Star of David makes it clear to her that there is still a big problem in Germany. Because the police are not in front of the school because there would be drug offenses there. No, the officials are there to protect the Jewish students from attacks.
Susan Sideropoulos does not want to “raise her children in fear”
A fact that the two sons Liam and Joel were not aware of for a long time. The boys grew up believing that a constant police presence was necessary in front of every school. Susan Sideropoulos has not addressed the subject for a long time. “Because I refuse to raise my children in fear, that has not been an issue for a long time,” said the former GZSZ actress.
Above all, the access to social media aroused an awareness of anti-Semitism in their children. “The first time we discussed the subject was after the assassination attempt in Halle. Suddenly my children asked me openly at the breakfast table: ‘Mom, why did a man try to come into a synagogue to kill people? ‘”For the 41-year-old, it is not just the fact that her children have to ask such questions that is painful, but the extent of the spread of hatred on social media.

Susan Sideropoulos has never had to experience anti-Semitism firsthand and yet the topic is omnipresent. It is therefore an affair of the heart for them to get prejudices out of the way. In the documentary “Shalom & Hallo”, which will run on Monday, October 25, 2021, at 8:15 pm on Das Erste, she embarks on a personal journey and immerses herself in 1700 years of Jewish history in Germany.
