A first suspect was arrested by Sacramento police on Monday after the shooting that left 6 dead and 12 injured on Sunday in the Californian capital, one of the worst in the United States since the beginning of the year.
“Investigators have identified Dandre Martin, 26, as a suspect. The man was arrested for assault and unlawful possession of a firearm,” police said in a statement, adding they searched three residences as part of their investigation.
Sacramento police had previously indicated that several shooters were involved in the shooting and that a stolen handgun had been found.
More than a hundred casings
The tragedy occurred around 2 a.m. Sunday in downtown Sacramento, the time when the many bars and nightclubs in this lively neighborhood close their doors.
A video circulating on social media appears to show a fight in the street involving several people, followed by a series of detonations and individuals running.
On the spot, the investigators found “more than a hundred casings” and “at least three buildings and three vehicles hit by firearms”, specifies the police in its press release.
Moment of silence during a basketball game
The shooting broke out not far from the seat of the Californian government and the basketball stadium where the Sacramento Kings team plays.
The Kings received the famous Golden State Warriors on Sunday evening and asked for a minute of silence in tribute to the victims before the start of the game.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr has urged governments to toughen gun control laws to prevent such tragedies.
“It’s probably the ninth or tenth minute of silence I’ve been in as a Warriors coach to mourn people who died in a shootout,” he said annoyed.
