Fortuna’s “moment of shock” ends in the clinic

Football becomes a minor matter: André Hoffmann is seriously injured in the second division duel between Fortuna Düsseldorf and Hannover 96. The Fortuna professional is taken to hospital with suspected cervical vertebrae and jaw fracture.

A violent clash overshadowed the duel between Fortuna Düsseldorf and Hannover 96. On matchday 13 of the 2nd Bundesliga, Fortuna’s André Hoffmann was apparently seriously injured. His club announced that he was brought to the Düsseldorf University Hospital with “suspected fracture of the jaw and cervical spine”.

The 28-year-old Hoffmann collided with Hanover’s Sebastian Ernst at full speed in the eleventh minute. Ernst, who was able to get up relatively quickly, caught Hoffmann on the head with his upper arm. The man from Düsseldorf remained motionless on his stomach, the doctors treated him for a long time on the pitch before he was carried out of the stadium with a ruff. Hoffmann could easily raise his hand to wave to the fans.

“It was a shock moment. It looked really bad,” said Düsseldorf’s offensive player Felix Klaus. Hanover coach Jan Zimmermann said: “I’m really sorry. Everything else is in the background.” He wished Hoffmann a speedy recovery.

On the pitch, Fortuna looked like the winner for a long time. Christoph Klarer headed the Rhinelander in front of 22,398 spectators in the 5th minute. In stoppage time it got turbulent. Substitute Florent Muslija (90 + 2) scored with a very remarkable long-range shot to compensate for Lower Saxony. Then referee Robert Kampka looked at a controversial penalty area scene again, but saw no criminal handball and decided against a penalty for Düsseldorf.

Fortuna is now in 12th place, Hanover has slipped to 15th place after the sixth game in a row without a win. SV Sandhausen cannot push the Düsseldorfers to the relegation place this weekend, as the game against table leaders FC St. Pauli had to be postponed due to 18 corona cases at the sand houses.
