  • The Competition Commission (Comco) has opened an investigation into three steel trading companies.
  • According to a statement on Wednesday, there are indications that the three retailers have violated antitrust law.

Specifically, the companies Arthur Weber, Debrunner Acifer Bewehrungen and Spaeter are said to have tied the sale of reinforcing steel to the ordering of spacer cages. They would have charged higher prices for reinforcing steel if their customers purchased the spacer cages from other companies.

According to the announcement, the Comco has carried out house searches and now wants to investigate whether the three companies coordinated this coupling and thus violated the antitrust law. It will also be examined whether they hold a joint dominant position and whether they have behaved abusively within the meaning of the Cartel Act. According to the information, the investigation is expected to take around two years.

Reinforcing steel, also known as reinforcing iron, is used in the form of bars and mats in concrete construction. Spacer cages are used to ensure the distance between the reinforcements installed in the concrete.
