Suspicion weighs heavily – instead of routine surgery, simply shot the dog?

The police are investigating an animal case in the Tyrolean Unterland: After his dog suffered a completely curable injury, a local is said to have preferred to skip the planned operation and simply shot the four-legged friend.

How did the four-legged friend, who was only one and a half years old, die? Did his owner actually have the heart to shoot his mixed breed (Border Collie/Australian Shepherd)? One thing is certain: the dog was recently hit by a car and the owner was referred by a vet to a better-equipped vet. “It was a broken foot. A routine operation. After two or three months, the animal would have walked normally again,” says the veterinary practice concerned. Then, according to the description, the dog owner suddenly called to cancel the surgery appointment. The man held back with more detailed explanations. Warning to veterinarians There was already a suspicion of evil – which went so far that there was a warning by telephone within the veterinarians: A dog owner could possibly show up with the unjustified desire to put his four-legged friend to sleep. However, this did not happen. Instead, the suspicion arose that the man had simply shot the mixed-breed dog. “The first information actually goes in the direction of an execution, but this was revised afterwards,” said a police officer when asked by “Krone”. The questioning of the dog owner is still pending, it said. The police emphasized that they wanted to investigate such incidents meticulously. The domestic animal welfare law is clear: killing a dog for no reason – including your own – is a punishable offence.
