Sustainable training – apprenticeship with a green future

Robin (17) is currently completing an apprenticeship as a mechanical engineering technician at the voestalpine international steel competence center in Linz. As a mechanical engineering technician, Robin works on machines and systems.

Technical interest and recommendations from friends led Robin to apprentice as a mechanical engineering technician after attending the Polytechnic School in Freistadt. The 17-year-old from Neumarkt im Mühlkreis became aware of voestalpine and the training opportunities there via social media. “In the second year of my apprenticeship, I am already receiving independent orders for work that I learned in the training center, such as grinding, cutting or drilling,” says Robin, who is currently working in blast furnace operations. His area of ​​work includes the maintenance and operation of systems that are already largely be controlled digitally. After completing his apprenticeship with a high school diploma, Robin might also want to do a master’s degree: “But I still have time for that,” he says. The future will also offer exciting tasks: The first green electricity-powered electric arc furnace will be built in Linz by 2027, replacing a blast furnace and thus making a significant contribution to CO² savings. Around 410 young specialists are currently being trained in the state-of-the-art training center in Linz. There are around 20 apprenticeships to choose from.
