Sweden ends freeze on UNRWA payments

STOCKHOLM, March 9 (Reuters) – Sweden announced on Saturday that it would end the freeze on its payments to UNRWA and allocate 200 million crowns (18.3 million euros) to the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees , engaged in a standoff with Israel which accuses it of collusion with Hamas.

Several countries including the United States and Britain suspended their funding to UNRWA in late January after Benjamin Netanyahu’s government accused a dozen agency employees of being involved in the attack of Hamas in southern Israel on October 7.

The Swedish government said UNRWA was committed to strengthening its internal controls, among other measures. (Simon Johnson, Jean-Stéphane Brosse for the French version)
