The Swedish right won Wednesday, October 12 a new deadline of two days to form a government with the unprecedented support of the far right of the Democrats of Sweden (SD), a month after their victory in the legislative elections.
The expected Prime Minister and leader of the conservative Moderates party, Ulf Kristersson, said he was confident of being able to complete discussions with a view to a vote in Parliament to elect him as head of government on Monday.

“On the principles, we are completely ready with what we wanted to do and we are going towards the formation of the government in the coming days.“, he announced at a press conference. “There are a few details we want to look at to wrap it all up“, he said to justify his request for an extension.
This was granted to him by the President of the Swedish Parliament, Andreas Norlén. The latter has set a new deadline for Friday 11:00 a.m. (09:00 GMT), he said in a statement. If agreed by that date, MPs would vote Monday on Mr Kristersson’s election as Prime Minister. The latter had been officially charged with forming a government on September 19. Negotiations took longer than expected.
The most likely scenario is that of a government comprising Mr. Kristersson’s Moderates and his Christian Democrat allies. These are ready to govern with the support of the SDs in Parliament, but without having them in government.

Big winners of the September 11 elections with a record 20.5% of the vote, Jimmie Åkesson’s SD will become the biggest force in the new majority, with 73 seats.
By adding the Moderates (68 seats), the Christian Democrats (19) and the Liberals (16), the “constellationof the rights has an absolute majority of 176 seats. Against 173 for the opposition, now led by the Social Democrats of outgoing Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson.
The main uncertainty concerns the presence in the government team of the Liberals, the third party of the traditional right and the most distant politically from the SD. Never before has the Swedish right agreed to govern with the support of the Swedish Democrats in the Riksdag.
