Anyone who had bet their money on Rögle reaching the final before the playoffs in Sweden would now be a proud sum richer. Swiss defender Lian Bichsel’s team had a hard time in ninth place Svenska Hockey League and had to get through the pre-playoffs in order to even be able to take part in the season finale.

That’s where the fairytale began: First Timra was eliminated with two wins before going against qualifying winner Färjestad in the quarterfinals. The champion favorite was bowled out with a 4-0 win, as was the qualifying second place Växjö Lakers a round later.

Bichsel with the golden goal

The first setback came in the final against Skelleftea (0-1 in game 1). But in game 2, which also took place away, Rögle hit back and won 1-0. Bichsel, to be precise, became the match winner, scoring the golden goal with a powerful slapshot.

There are still 3 wins left to finish the ice hockey fairytale. The next game takes place on Thursday evening in Rögle.
