Three members of the Swiss Guard refused to be vaccinated against Covid-19 despite instructions from the Vatican. The Swiss Guards in question have since left the famous corps and have returned to Switzerland. The “halberdiers left their service voluntarily,” reported the Italian newspaper “Il Messagero” On Sunday.
Guard spokesman Lieutenant Urs Breitenmoser said that all Swiss Guardsmen had been asked to be vaccinated. This “in order to protect their health and that of the others with whom they come into contact in the course of their service”.
Three members of the guard have therefore decided not to obey this request and to leave the corps voluntarily, as Breitenmoser confirmed on Sunday.
Green Pass in the Vatican
Three other guardsmen have been temporarily suspended from duty while awaiting vaccination.
Pope Francis (84) had himself vaccinated against the virus. He repeatedly emphasizes the selfless, charitable, and health value of vaccination.
During the pandemic, the guards on duty wear protective masks. In addition, the Vatican issued the “Green Pass” requirement in September. Anyone entering the area must either be vaccinated or have a recent negative test. This also applies to tourists who want to visit the Vatican. (kes)
