Stan Wawrinka failed in the first round of the Swiss Indoors in Basel against Russian Alexander Shevtschenko (3:6, 6:7).
In the end, even the frenetic Basel audience couldn’t help Wawrinka anymore. In the exciting tiebreak of the second round, the 38-year-old Romand left two set points unused. Shevchenko, for his part, used the third match point after 105 minutes to make it 6:3, 7:6 (10:8). The 22-year-old newcomer did this with his signature shot, the backhand longline.
The Russian appeared with impressive calmness. He quickly got over his initial nervousness and set about demonstrating his skills. Wawrinka, who was competing in Basel for the 16th time, was disappointing for long stretches. He showed weaknesses when returning and struggled with himself.
Wawrinka improves after a false start
After a completely unsuccessful opening set with 3 service losses, Wawrinka improved significantly in the second round, but found no way to counter the service of the qualifier from Rostow. The symbiosis with the fans in the St. Jakobshalle, which carried him to the quarterfinals in 2022, almost extended his tournament life a little. But in the crucial moments, Wawrinka lost his killer instinct.
For Shevchenko, the journey along the Rhine bend continues. In the round of 16 he will face Taylor Fritz (USA/ATP 9) or Max Purcell (AUS/ATP 43). From a Swiss perspective, Wawrinka’s outing is a blow to the neck. After all, Dominic Stricker qualified for the round of 16.
