Swiss judiciary gone astray

Parliament must take a closer look at the federal courts. Otherwise intrigues, self-importance and absurdities will get out of hand.

The judiciary as a darkroom? The Federal Supreme Court in Lausanne.

On Wednesday, an election business is on the agenda in the Federal Palace, which, in contrast to the Federal Council election a week earlier, is practically only of interest to the legal world. It is about the appointment of the new Federal Supreme Court President. The nominee is Yves Donzallaz, who, unlike most of his counterparts, has gained a certain notoriety among the general public. This because of the open dispute between him and “his” party, the SVP. For years, people there were angry about Donzallaz’ internationalist attitude and wanted to get rid of him – as expected, the shot backfired: Anyone who publicly tangles with judges regularly draws the short straw. A few weeks ago, Donzallaz resigned from the SVP and is now considered independent.
