Switzerland lags behind when it comes to solar and wind power

When it comes to renewable energies from the sun and wind, Switzerland ranks fifth from last in a comparison of European countries. But when hydropower is included, it makes it into the top flight.

Switzerland still lags behind in the use of solar energy: floating barges with solar panels in the Valais reservoir Lac des Toules.

In principle, Switzerland has a high proportion of renewable energies in its electricity mix. Hydropower has long covered around 60 percent of domestic electricity production. The bottom line is that Switzerland is in a good fifth place when it comes to renewable energies. However, photovoltaics and wind still contribute comparatively little to domestic electricity production.
