“System needs to be changed”
MacKenzie Scott involuntarily gets richer
MacKenzie Scott, one of the richest people on the planet, cannot give away their money as quickly as their wealth grows. Despite substantial donations, she is now $ 20 billion richer than when she divorced Jeff Bezos.
MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon boss Jeff Bezos, is eager to donate billions – but her fortune still grows faster than she gets rid of her money.
Scott and Bezos divorced in 2019 after 25 years of marriage. Scott left the lion’s share of the joint fortune to her ex-husband, but still received around four percent of all Amazon shares. The package was worth around $ 38 billion at the time.
Since then, Scott says he has donated approximately $ 8.4 billion. The money went to several hundred charitable organizations. The selected institutions campaign against racism or for education, among other things.
After her divorce from Bezos, Scott announced that she would donate at least half of her billion dollar fortune. She joined the initiative “The Giving Pledge”. Your own fortune was made possible by a system that needs to be changed, Scott said. She also believes “that it would be better if disproportionate wealth were not concentrated in a small number of hands, and that the solutions to this problem are best designed and executed by others.”
But given the rapid rise in Amazon shares, Scott is getting richer despite the substantial donations. According to “Bloomberg”, she is in 24th place in the global billionaire ranking with assets of around $ 58 billion – 20 billion more than when she divorced.
