Szekeres replaced – Johannes Steinhart is the new President of the Medical Association

Johannes Steinhart is the new President of the Austrian Medical Association. The 67-year-old was elected on Friday as part of the Medical Association Days in Bad Radkersburg. Steinhart was the favorite in the race for office.

He is a member of the ÖVP-affiliated “Association of Austrian Doctors” and has been President of the Vienna Medical Association since May. Steinhart thus replaces his predecessor Thomas Szekeres. The list of Steinhart, who often represents the interests of doctors quite boldly, became the group with the most votes in the Vienna chamber elections in March. That was also the case in the last elections, but this time his opponent Szekeres, who was close to the SPÖ, did not manage to forge a coalition against him. It is a rarity in the medical association that a new head of the regional chambers also becomes president of the federal government. Michael Neumann was the last to do this in 1986. In the election of the Vienna Medical Association on March 19, Steinhart became the party with the most votes – ahead of the Skezeres list. That was also the case in the last elections, but back then Szekeres, as the second-strongest force, still managed to form a coalition against the relative majority of the Steinhart list. This time Steinhart, who is also head of the Curia for resident doctors, turned the tables.
