Tablet and PC markets: an ever darker future

According to IDC, the PC and tablet markets are expected to contract. Tablet and PC shipments will decline nearly 12% in 2022, the research firm said, and are expected to decline further in 2023.

On the other hand, IDC indicates that shipments of tablets and PCs will continue to hold above pre-pandemic levels. But uncertain economic conditions will threaten stocks and increase market saturation next year.

“The reality is that PC and tablet makers will struggle in the coming months as not only volumes are expected to decline, but so are average selling prices,” said Jitesh Ubrani, research director at IDC.

Customers will favor the mid-range

The director also clarified that excess PC and tablet inventory is forcing manufacturers to cut prices sharply. And as long as there is economic turmoil, products will move away from high-end features and towards mid-range products.

Last October, IDC reported that tablet shipments were down 8.8%. It was then the fifth consecutive quarter of decline in the tablet market. This market contraction follows two years of massive growth, which can be mainly attributed to economic factors.

“The market is now experiencing not only a slowdown in demand, but also strong macroeconomic headwinds. Even though most Android tablets and Chromebooks are cheaper, we’re now seeing buyers worried, even at the low end. This is largely due to these growing economic concerns, ”explains Anuroopa Nataraj, analyst at IDC, in a press release.
