HUALIEN, Taiwan (Reuters) – The search continues in Taiwan for several people still missing on Friday, following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake off the island on Wednesday.

The earthquake, the most violent in 25 years for the island, left ten people dead and more than 1,000 injured. Hundreds of people were also stranded in a nature park after roads were cut off by rocks.

Taiwanese firefighters said 18 people, including four foreign nationals, were still missing with no word on their whereabouts.

Rescuers are also trying to make contact with six other people who went missing on a hiking trail, firefighters added.

The head of rescue teams in the southern Taiwan city of Kaohsiung said bad weather could complicate search operations on Friday.

“Rain increases the risk of landslides and landslides,” Su Yu-ming said. “These factors are unpredictable, so we cannot confirm the number of days that will be required for research.”
