Three public holidays and Whitsun holidays – there are many reasons to take a vacation in May. These destinations should be on your radar.

In many places, May heralds the beginning of summer and is therefore the ideal time to escape from everyday life and discover the world. There are also three statutory ones Public holidays in Germany (Labor Day, Ascension Day, Whit Monday) that make vacation planning easier. There is a lot to discover in spring: from the dreamy streets of Europe to the exotic beaches of Asia: each of these travel destinations can satisfy the longing for far away places and create unforgettable impressions.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini presents itself as an ideal travel destination in May, especially for German travelers who want to escape the cooler spring air. The Greek island attracts with mild temperatures between 16 and 23 degrees, which are ideal for various outdoor activities. From long hikes along the Caldera to lazy days on the black and red sand beaches, Santorini offers a variety of ways to enjoy nature without having to endure extreme summer temperatures or crowded tourist hotspots.

In spring, visibility is clearer and one can admire the breathtaking sunsets that Santorini is famous for. Together with the characteristic white buildings and blue roofs, the island offers a picturesque backdrop and in May also a rich cultural offering. The island is known for its local festivals and traditional Greek culture. For foodies, the local cuisine offers an exquisite selection of fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes, complemented by the excellent wines of local wineries that offer visits and tastings.

Paris, France

Paris is a particularly attractive travel destination in May, not least because of the ideal spring weather that bathes the city in a perfect light. When the temperatures are mild, you can enjoy long walks along the Seine, through picturesque districts and flowering gardens such as the Tuileries or the Jardin du Luxembourg. In addition, the tourist crowds are not yet at their summer peak, which makes the waiting times at famous sights such as the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower more bearable.

There are also numerous cultural events taking place in Paris in May, from film festivals to exhibitions to live music. Paris also comes to life in culinary terms in spring, when the numerous cafés and restaurants open their terraces and treat locals and tourists alike to classic French cuisine. The easy accessibility from Germany by plane, train or car as well as the opportunity to explore other European destinations from Paris make the French capital an ideal starting point for larger European trips.

Bali, Indonesia

Bali also offers German travelers a combination of ideal weather conditions and lower tourist volumes in May. After the end of the rainy season, the Indonesian island enjoys mostly sunny and warm weather – ideal for exploring the diverse landscapes from lush rainforests and volcanoes to stunning beaches and rice terraces. Aside from the heat, May is not as crowded as peak season, allowing vacationers to experience the natural beauty and famous sights such as the temples of Uluwatu and Tanah Lot or the arts and culture scene of Ubud in a quieter and more authentic atmosphere.

There are also cultural highlights at the beginning of May with the Bali Spirit Festival (May 1st to 5th) and at the end of May with the Ubud Food Festival (May 31st to June 2nd) where visitors to the island can delve deeper into their culture can immerse yourself. Speaking of diving, for lovers of water sports, the conditions for diving and snorkeling in May are ideal, with calm waters and clear visibility revealing the diverse underwater world. Edinburgh, Scotland

Spring also reigns in May in Edinburgh, Scotland, and the city shows off its most beautiful side. Extensive exploration tours through the historic streets and parks are easily possible on foot: walks through the Princes Street Gardens or the Royal Botanic Garden, which are in full bloom in May, are unforgettable impressions. The cultural offering also reaches its peak in May, particularly with the Edinburgh International Children’s Festival (25 May to 2 June), which offers a wide range of creative and inspiring performances for children and adults.

Iceland

If it gets too warm too quickly in Germany in May, you might find relief in the Icelandic spring. Although it gets comparatively milder here in May, temperatures above 25 degrees, which were already the case in Germany in April, are usually rare on the island state. Instead, visitors can expect temperatures of 15 to 20 degrees, ideal for extended exploration tours, which even offer the experience of the midnight sun thanks to the extremely long days.

In general, Iceland attracts outdoor and nature enthusiasts. Whether hiking, horseback riding or even the first rafting tours of the season: anyone who loves nature will get their money’s worth in Iceland. The roads are also easier to drive in May than in winter and nature shows its liveliest side with blooming flora and active wildlife. Don’t forget your camera! In addition, there is less going on in May, so you can explore famous sights such as the geothermal areas, the mighty Gullfoss or Seljalandsfoss waterfalls and the impressive national parks in peace and without large crowds.
