Talking with Gemini in Google Message is now possible on almost every smartphone… and almost everywhere

It must be said that since the start of the year, to take advantage of the potential of Gemini within Google Messages, you have had to own a Pixel smartphone or a high-end Samsung model (Galaxy S24, Z Fold/Flip 5, Galaxy S23 …). This is no longer the case, and the Mountain View firm indicates, in an announcement dedicated to the arrival of Gemini in India, to deploy the assistant within Messages on most Android smartphones. To benefit from it, you must still meet a few access conditions detailed by the American giant. You must therefore have the latest version of Google Messages, logically, and install it on a device equipped with at least 6 GB of RAM, which still excludes many entry-level models; RCS (Rich Communication Service) chats must be activated, and the language used on the smartphone must be English or French (in Canada). This last element rings a bell, because although there are now numerous smartphones that can access the integration of Gemini in Messages, it is reserved for 165 countries, of which France is excluded. France is not specifically targeted, since all the countries of the European Union are absent from the list published by Google, which points to a limitation linked to European legislation, and very probably to the GDPR. As such, it should be noted that conversations with Gemini are not end-to-end encrypted.

Gemini in Messages, what for?

What exactly do we mean by Gemini integration in Google Messages? This involves being able to converse with Google’s AI directly within messaging. When the service will be accessible in our regions… which we have no doubt, Google indicating “working hard to make it available to users in more languages and more countries around the world”. This will allow you to start a discussion with the AI in the application, as if it were a traditional conversation. You will therefore have to click on Start a discussion, then on Gemini, and ask all types of questions to the AI, with the possibility of attaching an image to the discussions. Enough to facilitate access to quick answers.

Remember, however, that the features provided by Gemini Nano are accessible to all users – they are being gradually deployed in a few countries, including France – and allow access to the Magic Editor function. This translates into a text reformulation tool adopting varied tones (formal, enthusiastic, etc.), which helps those who are hesitant to find the best way to write their messages.
