Tamron has unveiled the 50-400mm F / 4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD and announces its marketing for September 2022. In addition to a rather extravagant focal range, the new zoom has a relatively contained size.

It was at the very end of July 2022 that Tamron unveiled the 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD. This somewhat unusual zoom, intended for full-format Sony hybrids in E-mount, will arrive in shops on September 22. Its final price is not yet known at this time.

Original focal range

Tamron regularly unveils atypical lenses that separate themselves from the more classic models that manufacturers offer natively. Here, the 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD has a relatively modest sliding aperture, but above all a focal range that allows an x8 zoom. Thanks to the E-mount, it is possible to obtain a 75-600 mm zoom by mounting it on a camera equipped with an APS-C sensor.

Compared to more traditional 100-400mm zooms, Tamron says it offers a similar footprint despite a more open wide-angle position. The folded length is only 183.4 mm (in the closed position) for 1155 g on the scale. Like much of the rest of the range, the filter thread size is 67mm.

Proxiphoto with a zoom

The optical formula includes 24 lenses divided into 18 groups. Among the elements are 2 XLD (Extra Low Dispersion), 3 LD (Low Dispersion), 1 GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) and 1 additional aspherical to minimize potential optical defects.

A coating called BBAR-G2 is also applied to minimize the presence of ghosting or flare. A surging fluoride treatment equips the front lens. Obviously, Tamron specifies that the image quality is “high” over the entire focal range. This is rarely the case, all manufacturers combined, but we are curious to judge on the spot.

Even better, it is possible to indulge in close-up photography at 50mm thanks to a focusing distance of only 25cm for a magnification ratio of 0.5x. At 400mm, the magnification ratio drops to 0.25x for a comfortable focusing distance of 1.5m.

Promising stabilization in video

For autofocus – a fairly critical point on such a zoom – Tamron uses its VXD motors that are also found on other lenses unveiled earlier. Of course, it is difficult to envisage such a zoom without optical stabilization. If it is present, the manufacturer claims to have made a special effort for video thanks to artificial intelligence. Over the focal range of 50 to 100 mm, the lens thus chooses the best profile to correct involuntary movements.

The construction is designed to resist humidity and dust. The zoom can be locked closed to prevent deployment during transport, while a control button, a switch for autofocus management and another for settings are present. As an option, an Arca-Swiss compatible tripod mount will also be available. Obviously, the new zoom is compatible with the Tamron Lens Utility software to change the settings.

Prices & marketing

Marketing is scheduled for September 22, 2022, but could be delayed depending on the Covid-19 crisis. Pricing will be announced shortly before Tamron goes on sale.
