Tarnished silver: With these home remedies, the cutlery looks like new

Silver tarnishes over time. Simple home remedies remove the discoloration in no time.

The expensive silver chain, the inherited silver cutlery or the antique silver candlestick have one thing in common: They tarnish over time, become dull and therefore no longer look as beautiful as they did before. This is due to a chemical reaction in which the silver oxidizes with oxygen and the hydrogen sulfide contained in the air to form silver sulfide. The whole thing is not harmful to health, but neither is it particularly nice to look at. With a few means, jewelry, cutlery and household items made of real silver can be made to shine again quickly and easily.

Toothpaste and cold ash

To make spoons, rings or bracelets shine again, it is advisable to apply a thin layer of toothpaste to the objects. After a short exposure time, wash off the toothpaste with water and polish the objects dry with a cotton cloth. The same thing works with cold ash, by the way.

Lemon juice and salt

Tarnished jewelry can be polished to a shine again with a paste made from salt and lemon juice. If you replace the salt with baking soda, you will also get rid of stubborn deposits.

baking powder

Baking powder is not only suitable for baking, but also ideal for cleaning clothes or silver objects. Simply wet an old toothbrush with the white powder and some water and scrub the cutlery.

Aluminum foil

Aluminum foil also puts an end to tarnished silver. Simply line a bowl with the foil and fill it with warm salt water. Bathe the cutlery in it. The aluminum foil will turn black, but the silver objects will look like new. Then rinse them off with clean water and rub dry.
