Tax cut “necessary” – “The death of booksellers is not coming, it is already here”

Rescue for the bookstores
What should help? “A sales tax cut,” demands “Mr. Heyn” Helmut Zechner, specialist group chairman and operator of the traditional Klagenfurt bookstore Heyn. With 10 percent sales tax on books, Austria is a high-tax country – Germany charges 7, South Tyrol 4, and Switzerland only charges 2.6 percent. In England and Ireland there is a small tax on books. “What I am saying now is a loud cry for help: We are calling for a significant tax cut to below 4 percent. The death of booksellers is not coming, it is already here.”
