Tax refunds are paid from today, Actualité/Actu Impôts

Summer is often the best time of year for taxpayers, at least for those who are eligible for an income tax refund. These are most frequently situations where the deductions at source made last year were greater than the final amount of tax, but also refunds of reductions or tax credits. Last year, 12.7 million tax households benefited from such tax refunds for a total amount of 10.4 billion euros. If you are concerned this year, the reimbursement will take place either this Thursday, July 21 by transfer to your bank account, or on Tuesday, August 2.

There is no rule to know if you will benefit from your refund in July or August: it depends directly on the organization of the tax administration.

Tax reductions or credits

Several types of tax reductions or credits may give rise to refunds. This may be the balance of the deposit already paid in January for taxpayers benefiting from a tax credit linked to the employment of a home-based employee, the care of children under 6 years old or in situations of tax reduction for dependency expenses (EHPAD) or Pinel rental investment.

In the event of a new tax credit, i.e. acquired for the first time in 2021, the down payment rule not having been able to apply in January 2022 (the tax authorities do not have data for 2020 ), the refund will be made in one go this summer.

With regard to subscriptions to the capital of SMEs, FIPs or FCPIs, the tax reduction (IR-SMEs at 18% or 25%) is also fully reimbursed this summer.

Be careful, in some cases, the January installment may ultimately exceed the reduction or tax credit acquired in the end. You will therefore have to repay this overpayment.

Regularization this fall

Conversely, it also frequently happens that the deductions already made in 2021 do not fully cover the final tax. 10.8 million tax households thus had an amount to pay last year for a total of 16.3 billion euros. For these taxpayers still liable for additional tax to be paid or an overpayment, the regularization will only take place this fall. If the amount to be paid is less than €300, it will be subject to a single direct debit on September 26. Above €300, the direct debit will be spread over 4 installments from September to December (27 September, 27 October, 25 November and 27 December 2022).
