Donald Trump is reluctant to give insights into his finances. Not so Joe Biden. The US President has been making his tax returns public for years. Over the past year, the Democrat and his wife’s earnings are slightly less than they will be in 2021.
US President Joe Biden and his wife Jill said they earned nearly $580,000 last year and paid about $170,000 in taxes. The re-publication of his earnings is in line with Biden’s “commitment to transparency,” the White House emphasized in its statement. Biden has disclosed his earnings for 25 years now.
The gross income of the President and his wife, who also works, was 579,514 dollars in 2022, around 528,779 euros, and thus around 30,000 dollars below their earnings in the previous year. The largest part of the Bidens’ income in 2022 was reportedly made up of the $400,000 presidential salary set by the US Congress.
Jill Biden, who teaches at Northern Virginia Community College and is the first US First Lady with a job outside the White House, earned $82,335. The couple paid federal taxes at 24.6 percent of their earnings, or $137,658. In addition, Joe and Jill Biden paid $29,000 in taxes to their home state of Delaware, and the First Lady also paid a good $3,000 in income taxes in the state of Virginia.
The list lists a good $20,000 in charitable donations. The largest donation, $5,000, went to the Beau Biden Foundation, named after Joe Biden’s late son, which fights against child abuse.
Trump makes $5 million from speeches
Biden’s open handling of his earnings differs significantly from that of his predecessor Donald Trump. The Republican, who wants to run again in next year’s presidential election, has for years resisted allowing the public to view his tax returns. When Trump had to disclose his financial situation for a few years at the instigation of the Democrats in the US Congress, it became clear that the real estate entrepreneur had paid practically no income tax, despite profits running into the millions.
Because of his renewed presidential candidacy, Trump disclosed his finances at the end of March. Accordingly, he earned more than five million dollars with appearances as a speaker. His series of digital trading cards, which show him in various poses including cowboy, astronaut and fighter pilot, brought him between $100,000 and $1 million.
Biden’s deputy Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff also made their earnings public. In 2022, they earned $456,918 gross and paid $93,570 in taxes to the federal authorities and a good $17,000 in their home state of California.
