This is the risk when you fire a large part of your moderation team. Fake pornographic photos and videos of Taylor Swift are circulating on X without moderation succeeding in doing anything about it.
The symbol is catastrophic. Dozens of AI-generated images showing Taylor Swift in suggestive positions have appeared on X, Elon Musk’s social network, in recent days. And it seems that the site’s moderation is completely incapable of dealing with the deluge of deepfakes affecting the pop star.
Too lax moderation
According to the site 404 Media, a good part of these illegal edits come from a Telegram group dedicated to the production of false images via AI. One post, now deleted, managed to reach 45,000 million impressions, attracted thousands of likes and generated 24,000 retweets before finally being removed by the site’s moderation teams. The content, posted by a “verified” user, will have remained online for a total of 17 hours, while hundreds of other accounts have the opportunity to save and reshare these images on X and other platforms.
The lack of effectiveness of moderation in this matter is all the more critical since the rules for using the platform specify in black and white that “misleading content» are prohibited, in particular those “employing artificial intelligence algorithms to create images containing real people“. And this is far from the first time that this phenomenon has manifested itself on X.
A catastrophic history
In June 2023, TikTok stars found themselves unwillingly in pornographic deepfakes circulating on the platform. In France, journalist Salomé Saqué was the victim of the same tactics of intimidation and harassment. Even little or unknown people can fall victim to the same fate, but the Taylor Swift affair has the advantage of bringing the problem to the forefront due to the singer’s immense popularity.
