How easy is it to implement sustainability in everyday life? Four colleagues, four opinions.
»I make deals with myself«
“Unfortunately, I don’t live as green as I did before the pandemic. I struggle with the fact that I drive more because I don’t feel comfortable in public transport at the moment – but I don’t feel comfortable on my bike in bad weather either. My trick: I make deals with myself. If it’s not raining and it doesn’t cost me more than 15 minutes extra, I take the bike. The same with meat: I don’t really eat any. But if I’m invited and it’s organic, then I’ll make an exception. So I don’t always have to make new decisions.”

»Zero waste when eating«
“I’m getting closer and closer to my ideal of a green everyday life – especially in the kitchen. All groceries are stored here where they are particularly comfortable and can therefore be kept for longer. Wilted vegetables, radish greens and stale bread do not end up in the garbage, but are processed into casseroles, pestos, soups, smoothies and croutons in a zero-waste style. Leftovers are frozen or shared with loved ones. The little things often make the difference.”

»I buy less clothes«
“In 2021 I set myself a personal sustainability challenge: I only wanted to shop second-hand. Socks and underwear excluded. It went well – but after a few months I became weak, a coat was too tempting. I now approach things more realistically and make sure that sustainable materials such as organic cotton or Tencel are used, that the manufacturing process is environmentally friendly and that I buy less overall.”

»Certain ingredients no longer get on my skin«
“Within Germany I try to avoid flights, and I hardly eat any meat anymore. With my beauty products, I make sure that the list of ingredients does not contain any plastics such as microplastics or silicones. Because they are not easily biodegradable. However, I don’t see that as a sacrifice. After all, my skin feels at least as good without it, because there are now very good, more sustainable plant-based care products.”
