Techland (Dying Light): a partnership with the Chinese giant Tencent announced, which will become its majority shareholder

Last year, the Polish studio Techland published Dying Light 2 Stay Human, which he has since provided with content in the same way as he did for the first episode. At the same time, its teams are working on the development of a mysterious AAA action RPG which this time will plunge us into a fantasy universe. While everything seems to be rolling for the entity, its president Paweł Marchewka has just publish a long message on the official website regarding the future of the studio and a partnership that risks making some of the players cringe, since it is with the Chinese giant Tencent.

In the era of excessive consolidation marked by takeovers of studios or publishers (like Microsoft with Activision Blizzard King), this is no longer surprising. So, Tencent will become the majority shareholder of Techlandwhich will retain ownership of its licenses and creative freedoma message systematically hammered home in each similar case.

Dear players,

I want to share some really exciting news that will mark the start of a new chapter in Techland’s history.

Techland has been a huge part of my life for over 30 years now and it’s something I truly cherish.

Techland is our games, the amazing team behind them, and you, the people who play these games. You are the reason we create them.

Whenever I think about the future of Techland, I want the best for our games, the team, and you. And while I’m very proud of our accomplishments as an independent studio over all these years, I think the best is yet to come.

We dream of making Dying Light the ultimate zombie gaming experience for players around the world, bringing you multiple amazing adventures and pushing the limits of single-player and online modes to a whole new level.

Our open-world action-RPG in a fantasy setting is already becoming something really specialand the goal here is to make sure it will live up to expectations as our first new IP in nearly a decade.

Can we make these dreams come true? Yes we can. But what we have realized is that the best and boldest dreams can only be achieved by working side by side with like-minded friends and strong partnerswho share the same vision, the same passion and are willing to support them with their knowledge, experience and abilities.

Today, I am happy to announce the partnership with Tencent which is on the way to becoming the majority shareholder of Techland.

Teaming up with Tencent will allow us to move forward at full speed in executing the vision of our games. We chose an ally who has already partnered with some of the best video game companies in the world and helped them reach new heights while respecting their ways.

We will retain full ownership of our IPs, maintain creative freedom, and continue to operate as we believe. I will also continue to be the CEO of the studio.

I couldn’t be happier that we’re taking this giant step into the future and sharing this moment with you.

Thank you for being with us on this journey, for playing our games and for being an endless source of inspiration and positive energy that keeps us going. The best memories are still ahead of us!

Pawel

More than 30 years after its creation in 1991, it is therefore quite a turning point for Techland. Whether Dying Light 2 Stay Human interests you, it is still available on Amazon.
