Technip energies: Technip Energies will design a major offshore wind turbine project

MILAN (Reuters) – Italian firm Renexia, which specializes in renewable energies, has chosen Technip Energies to design the key elements of one of the world’s largest wind farms, the French group announced on Thursday.

Technip Energies, which this year launched a division dedicated to projects related to the energy transition, will carry out the preliminary engineering and design of the Med Wind project worth 9 billion euros proposed by Renexia.

Located in the Sicily Channel, the project will have an installed capacity of 2.8 gigawatts (GW), enough to supply power to more than three million Italian homes, and will include 190 floating foundations for wind turbines.

Renexia, a subsidiary of the private Toto group, is currently studying the environmental impact of the project and, according to a company spokesperson, expects to obtain authorizations to start construction in 2024.

Technip Energies estimates that there will be 60 GW of floating offshore wind projects in the world by 2040, with 150 to 180 billion euros of investments.

The group is working on similar projects in South Korea and believes that its technologies used in the construction of floats can give it an advantage in the European market, said Willy Gauttier, vice president of floating offshore wind at Technip Energies.

“We have a dominant position in Korea and we also want to take first place in Europe. That’s why this project is important to us,” he said in an interview.

“We recorded order intake of €200 million last year for our energy transition business, excluding liquefied natural gas. This year, we expect to reach €1 billion in order intake (in this sector)”, announced Willy Gauttier.
