TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan and the European Union plan to start cooperation talks on advanced materials for next-generation chips and batteries to reduce their dependence on China, reports the Nikkei business daily on Saturday.

Iliana Ivanova, European Commissioner for Innovation and Research, told the daily that establishing such a framework for dialogue in areas of common interest would be beneficial for both sides.

This framework, which should be put in place from April in response to a request from the EU, aims to reduce dependence on China for materials such as rare metals, essential in particular in the manufacturing of batteries for electric vehicles, according to the Nikkei.
