Tehran executes Iranian-British accused of spying

Iran announced on Saturday January 14 the execution by hanging of Ali Reza Akbari, an Iranian-British binational accused of espionage. Iran’s judiciary agency Mizan Online did not specify when the execution took place.

Tehran accused, without providing evidence, Ali Reza Akbari, who worked in the Iranian interior ministry, of being a spy for the British intelligence agency MI-6. According to Mizan Online Mr. Akbari, 61, was sentenced for “corruption on Earth and for undermining the internal and external security of the country for having transmitted information” UK.

His death sentence handed down during a period of protests in the country sparked international outcry.
