Tekken 8: Here are our expectations to celebrate the release of the Bloodline series on Netflix

Released in 2015 on arcade machines exclusively in Asia, then in 2017 in the rest of the world, it has now been a good seven years since Tekken 7 is present in the landscape. Even becoming, in part, the only true representative of versus 3D. Although excellent, SoulCalibur VI does not have a large enough community to shine at its fair value, even if its sales are convincing. As for dead or alive, since the 4th shutter, the developers do not manage to find the magic and miss inspiration. If we cross our fingers for a return of a saving DOA, the biggest expectation remains logically a sequel to Tekken 7.

We had to wait for a mysterious teaser during EVO 2022 to have official confirmation of a new opus. tekken 8 ? Hard to say. However, whether it bears the name or not, it will be considered as such. Few things to put in their mouths therefore, except that it will not see the light of day before, at least, during 2023 or during Game Awards. While an update has just arrived, for rebalancing, and the anime Tekken: Bloodline streamed on Netflix, just released, this is an opportunity for us to share with you elements that we wish to see in the next game of Katsuhiro Harada and his teams.

A family matter

Let’s be clear from the start, we will mainly talk about contributions at the solo content level. Given the popularity of the franchise and the success of competitions on the esports scene, which saw the coronation of the legendary Knee-Sama at the last EVO, it is obvious that the Bandai Namco teams are going to look more seriously at Online and competitive.

It must be said that this is currently not the strong point of Tekken 7, but the current trend imposes standards that have become almost mandatory. The contribution of a solid netcode rollback (we refer you to our dedicated article) to guarantee optimal fluidity in online combat thus becomes a necessity.. The cross-platform is also a definite, beneficial and legitimate added value. The majority of players are on PC, while the competitions take place on Sony machines.

Still, what was sorely lacking in the latter tekken when released, it is indeed his single-player content. Disappointing vis-à-vis competitor like mortal kombat, being an exemplary student in this category. But also disappointing because ultimately, in fact, the portion of players, competitive players is a minority of the 9 million people who own the software. Finally, it’s always frustrating to see this lack of effort when in the past, especially on episodes 3 and 5, the license knew how to be generous. It is an understatement knowing that these are the two best opuses of the saga. Still to this day.

The lapse of time between two sections will have never been so long as for this potential tekken 8 who lets himself be desired. Many changes have occurred in the video game industry, and in particular for fighting games. Players’ expectations have also had time to grow. The result will have to be worth it. Especially since games of the genre have been coming back in force for some time, especially in 2D, but the competition is getting tough to have our brain time and prevent us from looking elsewhere. And what about the promises of street fighter 6 which, for once, seems to be heading towards ambitious single-player content. Harada must also enter this ring and impose himself there.

What to expect from the next opus? The total. We are not going to do in the original, for us, like what a tekken 3 Where 5 in their time, it requires a consecration. It’s a direction that seems to be taking SF6, at least in the gameplay. Katsuhiro Harada must send us everything he has on hand. Already, we want to find the missing fundamentals. Reintroduce Survival and Team Battle modes. For the latter, it is a question of choosing from 1 to 8 fighters and facing a local friend who was doing the same. We could even put handicaps on ourselves by choosing fewer characters. The winning fighter then recovers some life for the next fight, etc.

Beyond the pleasure provided, the idea of being able to enjoy it online would be a very good delirium. And an effective method to progress. Speaking of progression, a few improvements to the training sessions wouldn’t be too much. But we trust Tekken 7 is on the right track, then we should not take away the pleasure of discovery that sticks to the skin of the saga.

Arcade mode was also a way to improve since it encouraged testing the entire cast. In exchange for which we unlocked hidden characters or cutscenes. Interest non-existent in the 7th part. However, one of the defining things of the franchise has always been its roster, especially via its lore. It’s a universe where the protagonists have real personalities. They logically show through in the gameplay and character design, but the Arcade deepened them as it should. A screenplay impact that we want to find.

A tare carried around by Tekken 7 even though he gratifies us with the possibility of reviewing all the cut-scenes of the previous opuses. Not to mention its rather compelling story mode. Unfortunately, the other stakeholders are left in the background. Same thing for access to old OSTs and customization of menu and stage music. Once you’ve tasted it, it’s hard to do without it. To continue on the generosity, the mini-games of bowling and Tekken Ball should be reinstated, at least have something similar, without going through the DLC box. History to breathe without leaving the game. We are greedy in our expectations, but why deprive ourselves of believing in it.

To continue, know that personally, we want changes on the roster. Although it is essential to keep a minimum of 50 playable characters, we miss some faces. We think of Jun Kazama, mother of Jin. A charismatic fighter of great importance in the licensing universe. This requires adjustments to gameplay and style of play. We must avoid duplication with Asuka Kazama who takes over some of the movements. But there are Kuma and Panda after all. Other alumni could also make a strong comeback, such as Ogre and/or True Ogre. Which can make sense given the animated series taking place between opus 2 and 3.

And then, we must not forget either that this next tekken could just be a Tekken Tag Tournament 3or one tekken 8 disguised which would set up a mode Tag Team. This would allow to dare more additions of characters, even if it would reduce the possibility of having a slightly better constructed story.

But what we want more than anything, even those who don’t think about it want it, it’s Tekken Force, or a fake, no more no less. The legendary Beat’Em All mode with horizontal scrolling, inspired by Streets of Rage, and inaugurated in tekken 3, marked a generation of players. Like what is the krypt of MK11, this Beat’Em All must become a game in its own right. If the efforts are concentrated on this mode, the solo content will immediately be much more legitimate. Especially when you deliver such a large roster. There is always the concern for the important narration in the saga, but it is viable to use this mode to press on it.

We will end with a detour on the gameplay. This is our sole responsibility, but we hope for a readjustment for the Rage Art. Either remove it or make it single-use like the Fatal Blow at MK. Regarding the Rage Drive, difficult to say. We like the possibilities offered by the latter, although the presence of both is too much. We miss more dodging and moving combat.

The fear of an increase in hits that track hangs over the next title and could undermine this style of play, even as Knee-sama won the EVO by promoting the old-school approach. It’s hard to blame the developers, because it is clear that the more aggressive gameplay of the 7, whose shot tracking is not innocent, has found a buyer. But in the future, we preferred to stuff in Tekken Force, even if that obviously engages only us.
