Temperatures are rising – Only a short winter interlude: May with record heat

As of Monday, the cold air rush from the weekend in Tyrol will be yesterday’s snow again. It will be summery, but changeable. Like 2018, May was the warmest in 150 years.

Up to around 1600 meters, the cold front brought snow to Tyrol at its peak on Sunday. “But the sugared mountains will soon be history again,” says meteorologist Nikolas Zimmermann from the UBIMET weather service. And you won’t need a thick pullover any more during the course of this week, because the temperatures will rise again up to 28 degrees. That would then almost triple the maximum value on Sunday – for example in Innsbruck. And on the Brenner, plus degrees prevailed with oh and noisy. On Monday, however, it only goes up quite hesitantly, on Tuesday Zimmermann then expects maximum values of 19 to 24 degrees. On Monday afternoon and Tuesday evening there will be rain showers again – at least local ones. “It will be changeable throughout the week and there will hardly be a day without showers,” emphasizes the meteorologist. Humid summer weather dominates at the beginning of June, and 28 degrees are possible in the second half of the week. “It will also be thundery,” says Zimmermann. “The storms can also be severe from Thursday. Hail is definitely conceivable.”An unusual number of hot days with temperatures in excess of 30 degreesDespite the cold snap, the end of May was far too warm. This is documented on four hot days with at least 30 degrees and the average temperature. According to Zimmermann, it has so far been 18.3 degrees in Innsbruck. “We are thus experiencing the warmest May since records began 150 years ago,” said the meteorologist. Only in 2018 was it so exceptionally warm in May.
